Re: Consecutive Posting

Post by artymon I\/ » Mon 1st Aug 2022

I'm replaying Last of Us II....and man. I went in there blind, but I more or less figured out what the score was with Abby from the start.

I still just...as someone that spent an entire game working hard to keep Joel alive, I can't quite put to (child friendly) words and feelings to describe what it's like to watch Abby casually mash his brains in with a golf club.

I mean no disrespect to her actress of Neil or any of the wonderfully talented people etc etc etc....

I think the crux is...what really makes us hate Abby....under similar circumstances, we'd do the same. Exact vengeance no matter the cost. That's what Ellie does. She goes to hunt Abby down, twice in the game.

Take the person you love/care about most in a world where everything else had gone to Hades. Then have some guy come through and casually gank that person.

You'd want to hunt them down as well.

Abby is someone that has let herself be consumed with anger and revenge.

Would you still want to hunt them down if they saved your life?

That's the quintessential trope in fiction.

If someone saves you, you owe them. In Star Wars, Han Solo saves Chewbacca and the Wookie ends up staying with Han as part of a life debt (and because they became bros).

#stillsadChewiedidn'tgetahugwithLeia

LoU2 breaks this trope.
Joel and Tommy save Abby when they meet her. Or at least, they unquestionably come to her aid and escort her back to her base and go so far as to offer supplies and assistance.

All for Joel to get shotgunned in the knee and Tommy to get his face bashed in.

Followed by the other unpleasantries.

It could be argued that Joel already took a life...I dunno.

It's like, none of those characters are innocent.

Except Abby and Ellie until the moment they decide to extract vengeance on others.

I summed the game up once as unfavorable people doing unfavorable things in the name of avenging other unfavorable people that also did unfavorable deeds.

Ellie wants to kill Abby, who killed Joel.

Abby wants to kill Joel because he killed her father.

Joel killed her father because he was unwilling to not murder Ellie in the name of science.

And Joel doesn't want Ellie to die because she reminds him of his daughter and the last scrap of his humanity cries for him not to let her just get killed.

All throughout the first and second game, Joel and Tommy hint at having to do dark things during the time from the outbreak to the then present day.

But you know...something tells me they're exaggerating. At least....exaggerating by the "norm" standards of the game's version of 2038.

Like, Dina tells a story where she had to kill a guy attacking her and her mom at age 10. Definitely not a normal thing in our standards, not unheard of, but not normal. in the darker future, it happens. you see there are still plenty of evil people who will gladly use the dystopian/crumbled society to their ends.

I think Joel and Tommy had to kill some people and do things they weren't necessary proud of. But I bet every one of their actions could be justified. Either in a "needs of the many" logic or a having to do the bad thing and take care of the bad guy way.

Their actions speak for themselves. Tommy helped build an entire town and relatively safe haven.

I definitely goofed. They should have spent way longer at the lighthouse.

Did I goof? Like, yeah, I know that's what we're shown....but why the hell did Sam spend so much time at the lighthouse? Because...if you think about it....he really did spend a lot of time there.

He spent a lot of time, just to be at the bottom of the stairs when the final call comes through.

First call goes that he just searched it and had nothing. Which...well, it does imply, he literally says he searched it. I'd assume that means he went all the way to the top and the bottom, as much as he could anyway.

Death ray. Lol.

So yeah....

In game time, the one video I watched shows roughly 23 minutes pass between the first and last call.

Then us driving down there only takes three minutes. A two minute walk/fight to the Jeep, then three minutes to drive, albeit that was with some off-roading.

*smirks* I suppose it's true what Butler said once, illegal is usually faster.

.................well, naturally my head went right to the worst interpretation of that.

But yeah, I guess the guy who blows through the stop lights is going to get to where he's going faster than the guy who has to wait for Granny to cross the road, then get caught by the light....

Still. Feels really weird that Sam spent so much time at the lighthouse.

Either he called at the top of the tower when he claimed to have finished searching and had to huff and puff his way down the stairs or he stopped for a smoke break....none of which seems likely. Not when he's the most motivated to find the treasure.

So just what was he thinking. He and Nate would what, find the treasure? Yay. You found it first. Rafe has the means to actually take it out. So what, were you going to literally kill Rafe and every last one of his goons.....which I think it's implied he and Nate pretty much do gank every last one of them.

Or perhaps he was thinking to mislead Rafe long enough to move the treasure for themselves? Or maybe he even would have struck some sort of deal with Rafe....but Rafe didn't want the money. He never needed it. Just the prestige, the glory of "finding" the treasure.

But let's say they thoroughly mislead Rafe, left a fake clue that took him elsewhere, like National Treasure....was he just going to be like....hey surprise, there actually isn't a crime lord that's going to come kill me

Hm.

Maybe that's what he spent his time doing in the tower. Negotiating with Rafe. Trying to weasel some sort of deal.

Rafe: We already had a contract, Samuel. I was more than generous and you went and broke it. Now I've no choice but to do this without you.

Colin as a tiny, redheaded leprechaun. Like, it's such a fresh take from his troubled "bad boy" character.
