Site Upgrades - Did I Break Your Sig?

Post by MichaelM » Fri 2nd Mar 2018

I've done quite a few updates to the site over the past week or so.
  • Upgraded our forum software overall (So new features like the Notifications popup :) )
  • Moved server altogether <-- This should now fix the random crashes we get every few months. I should have done it years ago, sorry :(
  • Updated the shoutbox <-- The script we use stopped being maintained ages ago,
but I've tweaked it a bit now to work properly on current browsers, and hopefully solve our issue with overflowing messages. TLDR is that we shouldn't need to wipe the shoutbox every 2 hours anymore
  • Setup https so your browser should now mark FG as Secure (by showing the little padlock icon at the top).
One side-effect of the last point though is that I may have broken some people's signatures/avatars :(

If a page tries to load an image over the non-secure way (just with http://, no s), then the browser marks it as partially secure. That won't happen in core pages (like logins, or the control panel) where it matters most, but does happen on a lot of the threads where our custom signatures, post images etc appear.

I've fixed the majority with a script, but it will likely have broken a few.

To Get Your Old Sig Back

If your signature no longer loads certain images, right click where the broken image tries to load, and load the image in a new tab.

It will load at an address like: https://oi59.tinypic.com/5nj7s4.jpg

To fix it, just delete the `s` from the start, e.g. http://oi59.tinypic.com/5nj7s4.jpg

This should apply to very few people (Basically only if you've used a free host which isn't secure yet. Tinypic seems to be one of the very few that aren't!)

If you want to use another free host instead which doesn't need any registration, this site has been great for me: https://postimages.org/

Any Other Issues?

If you spot anything else broken around the site, let me know.

I still have a few things left to do (Like clearing out the giant backlog of registered bots is one! We have so many that the forum crashes each time I try to run the built-in script. Will have to figure out a way around that :D ), but feel free to suggest anything else :)

Couple more updates today, most obvious one is getting Google search working again for the forum. You'll see it on the header of each page now (Used to be down at the very bottom of every page, not sure if that was too out of the way to even realise it existed though  )

New registrations will also now hit an improved captcha. If that seems to work, I may try reverting the manual step where you have to change your user group after registering before you're able to post. Maybe... (It's been extremely effective against spambots though, so just a maybe :D )

Next up is to clear out as many of the old spam accounts as possible. There are 760,000 registered users on this board. It's so many that the forum crashes when I try to use the built in tools for this. That's insane :spam:

More updates today:
  • Shoutbox shows the full date+time if you hover the 15:30 short timestamp now
  • Shoutbox "Previous Messages" now takes you straight to the right log file, so you'll actually get to see all the recent messages (up to 200, then they're gone forever)
  • Finished purging our 12+ years worth of spambots. Turned out the 700,000 was only the activated accounts. Total number was over 1.5 million. All gone now, including any garbage PMs from them, so things like memberlist are noticeably faster now.
  • Activated Stop Forum Spam service (now that our memberlist is small enough for it not to kill the server when processing existing users for the first time :ninja:
I've pruned/cleared as much ancient content as I can. It's had a massive impact on our database size (5.5gb down to 1.5), which nobody but me is likely to care about, but makes it much easier for me to keep the site online without crashes :awesome:

That's everything off my list for now. Drop me a message if there are any more requests!
