-Artemis gets the book
-He kidnaps Holly
-He talks about how he misses his father at some point
-He gets the email from the Russians
-They all somehow get to work together and look for his father in return for Holly and some of the ransom
-Opal plots from the start and eventually causes some kind of distress, leading to the goblin thing
-Mulch appears at some point
-After everything works out Mulch takes the money.
I'm not fond of the idea myself, I'd much prefer to have seprate movies.
Eion probaly wanted to fit them together so in case the movie was a flop, and another one wasn't made, new fans would want to know "what happened to the LEP gold that Mulch stole? What happened to such and such, etc"...

They made the movie all about finding the pearls, which were goven to them in the books, and left out the entire Cronus plot. Annabeth had brown hair, they were all 17 rather than 12, Grover was cool, and there was a hydra that they weren't supposed to fight until the second book. Those are just a few among many problems. Now imagine combining books 1 and 2 on top of that. I rest my case.
BTW, have you heard that they're actually planning on turning the second book into a movie also? NO! They've already ruined the first book. Must they ruin the rest of the series???!!!!
