Anything about the Artemis Fowl books.

At some point after reading the last book I decided to work out some of the plot holes for it:

Firstly: Just saying, you heard Artemis himself say that the chances of the quantum eruption after the time-thing broke was ten percent if I remember correctly. That means that there is only a one-in-ten chance of that scenario playing out. However, that's completely what they prepared for, they didn't seem to take anything else into account once they thought of that. Nice job of calculating the odds Artemis... :(

Secondly: Although I do not know much about the Artemis Fowl universe. I do believe that certain laws of physics that apply once always apply. Therefore, when Artemis's Mother gets sick from Opal time-traveling forward we can assume that when magical time travel happens the effects of the time travel already happen, before the time travel itself does. Moving topics a little here is that when Opal time travelled forward from the past the same effects of her dying in the future should've happened. Because if she dies in the current time then she is in the current time when she dies, therefore her death doesn't have an effect on the past. so in other words it wasn't when she died that there should've been an effect, it was when she left the past that the effect should've happened. Also, the effects should've already been applied on the future. Which destroys the theory of everything blowing up.

Yeah, that's a really good point. You'd expect a genius to think of other things (though wasn't there another theory about what would happen? But I don't think they prepared for it though...)

I might not have understood correctly, but wasn't it Opal causing Artemis' mother to be sick? Not her time traveling? Since I don't see how the effects should have happened the moment she got to the future (though shouldn't that be impossible anyway? That's just like matter suddenly appeared and energy cannot be created or destroyed. In the theory of time traveling forward using a black hole, there's still one 'you' the entire time.)
What I'm really confused about in TLG, is after Opal kills her past self, how is she still there? Everything Opal effected blows up, though future Opal is fine? (I think there was a part explaining that, but I only had the book for a day, and sorta just skimmed). Like, there's a time paradox in the entire series.

Well, that's a good point, it should also effect Nopal, Opal's clone.

(I think we're assuming that time travel is possible through Sci-Fi means... XD) Think of it this way, imagine you put a CD in a cumpter to play music. After a bit you get bored and take it out, on your way to putting it away you drop it and it breaks. The question is, when does the music stop?

It stops when you take out the CD then? Unless the computer downloaded it and stuff...
So what's the point? How does that relate to the time travel and stuff?

^The point is, the CD breaking doesn't effect the music as long as the CD is out of the player. Opal moved out of her time and therefore out of the player. So obivously from the result the universe downloaded Opal, so her dying didn't change anything.

Also, Opal did cause Artemis's mother to be sick, by time travelling. The point is that the effects of the time travel happen before the time travel itself in that scenario. So the effects of Opal dying should've already taken place.

To make this all clearer: If Opal came out of the past, than how could that same Opal live on in the past until they reached the present. Assuming they're the same Opal.

Caleb, please don't spoiler it for the people who haven't read it. Try writing it inside this code. If you do it becomes hidden like this, but people can still choose to read it.
Code: Select all

On a more topic-related note, I felt like Artemis was a little out of character in the last book. Maybe that's because he's more mature now... But I do prefer our little criminal mastermind from the first books over his new self.
That's why the ending was not that satisfying for me. It didn't feel like Artemis anymore.

I would like to add something interesting to the time-travel discussion too, but then I should probably re-read the book. I'm just confused right now.

So I'm finally reading listening to it on tape my iPad, I'm about three chapters in and I'm enjoying it. Lots of the cop show-y goodness which is one of the reasons I love the series so much. Do you think Tarpon is Raine's twin? I've been wondering since the last book...
