I also thought it looked horrible. Everyone.
Come then all of you, come closer, form a circle,
Join hands and make believe that joined
Hands will keep away the wolves of water
Who howl along our coast. And be it assumed
That no one hears them among the talk and laughter.

Dude! Butler and Root look fat! And Foaly is just plain ugly. Artemis is okay, and Juliet is WAY too pretty looking. I like Holly's design but the ears are too long for all the faries. Mulch looked a LOT better than what I imagine he'd look like.
No offense to anyone if I called your faveorite charachter ugly.

Okay, I'll admit mainstream American import manga style tends to lean toward the shojo (feminine) but I think your view of Japaneses drawing styles as a whole is a bit limited, there are a whole range of styles, and many of them are very adult looking.
Off the top of my head I'll name Appleseed and Ghost in The Shell, as examples of a style that could work for AF.
And to show my opinion isn't biased, I'll point out that these are not things that I generally read but am familiar with the styles of.

The one problem I have with the design is that the LEP equipment looks slightly... cheap.
I mean, honestly, on the helmets they have these ridiculous goggles instead of bad-arse visors!(Look at my profile picture for an idea) And as for the guns, well, just don't ask.

I think it's not... proportionally. I mean, Butler's head is way too small and his neck is too big. That's an example. And Artemis has too small shoulders, though he actually looks okay. And Holly is kinda well made, but I think it could be better.
And yeah, technology isn't drawn good. Whole thing needs edits.Spudtron98 wrote:The one problem I have with the design is that the LEP equipment looks slightly... cheap.

I emit a chaos field which distorts time and space and creates chaos everywhere around me. That's why my room is always a mess.

The character designs were fine to me, and I'm pretty sure that Root's paunch was mentioned in Book 1. As for Foaly, his strange colour can be attributed to reflection from his screens.Star Jinin wrote:Dude! Butler and Root look fat! And Foaly is just plain ugly. Hmm, I dunno.
I kinda thought they were all a bit too... pointy. Butler was fine, though, and I was okay with Holly. I just didn't like the way Artemis was drawn.

I like the artist's backgrounds, but I'm not a huge fan of the designs. They look odd to me and the art seems weird. It'd probably work fine for another set of characters, just not so much the Artemis Fowl characters.
EDIT: Oh, and about the manga thing. It kind of depends on the style. Like, I'd say that the stereotypical shoujo manga style wouldn't work for AF, yeah, but the style they have in Death Note (anime or manga) would work.

I like all of the characters besides the Butler drawing. To myself I think it doesn't fit his description at all. To me his head should be more rounded off and not the pointy. Plus he should be bald, not have the blond hair-ish. Mostly... He should just have a head big enough to fit with his body... I just cant believe they made body is large but the head is so small. :/

I like Holly's design. It looks alot like i expected, and its the look i use when i made fan art of her. I think i like Foaly's design the least, because it wasn't what i imagined him as. Artemis was also very different than i expected.

I thought the graphic novel's design was off. I imagined it to be draw more like Death Note or Bakuman. In that kind of Anime/Manga style. It just didn't seem right.

I persoally liked none of the designs. I could pick out at least 5 things I don't like for each of the characters >.<

Re: Do you like the character design Graphic Novel?
The biggest fualt in the graphic novels, personally, was the size persective:
Elves that are under four feet being taller than a certain unnamed twelve year'old, i'm twelve, and i'm a little insulted.
Butler was twice the size of some adults, expecially in the beginning of the first book.
Artemis was as tall as other adults in the begining of the first book, are the adults also under four feet tall?
Other than that the characters were how i expected them to be. Meaning that they fit the book's description, a rare, but very good, thing.

It's like Trouble, but with many a variation.
